2011 Performances

Songs for Our Time October 15th
Songs for Our Time

Originally intended to recognise the anniversaries (10th and 25th respectively) of the September 11 Terrorist Attacks and the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster, this programme, which was given renewed significance by the events of 2011 around the world, was performed in the Claver Theatre at All Hallow's School, Brisbane, featuring Vladimir Bigdan (Cantor), Elizabeth Smalley (Soprano), Shannon Leonard (Tenor), Kevin Power and Michael Fulcher (Pianos), with visual presentations and introductions by the living composers of their own works in the following programme:
  • Samuel Barber - Agnus Dei
  • Roman Hurko - Requiem for the Victims of Chernobyl *Southern Hemisphere Premiere!*
  • John Peterson - Shadows and Light *Premiere of new version*
  • Tarik O'Regan - Threshold of Night
  • Ludwig van Beethoven - An die Freude (Ode to Joy).

Haydn's Creation May 21st
Josef Haydn's Creation

One of the favourites in the classical choral repertoire, Creation was performed in St John's Cathedral, Brisbane, with soloists Bethany Shepherd (Soprano), Nick Kirkup (Tenor) and Matthew Hirst (Baritone) and the Sinfonia of St Andrew's. This performance featuring a new English translation of the work by Paul McCreesh (of the Gabrieli Consort, London), used with permission.

TocH ANZAC Eve Service

2011 also saw QUMS members involved in joint performances with the Queensland Music Festival, the Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra and the Queensland Choir for a performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana on July 30th at Jimbour House, and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Brisbane Chorale, Queensland Choir and Canticum Chamber Choir for a performance of the Finale of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 on November 10th in the QPAC Concert Hall.

Handel's Solomon October 31st & November 6th
George Frederick Handel's Solomon
This exciting project saw the combined forces of QUMS and the Toowoomba Choral Society, together with the Sinfonia of St Andrew's and soloists Martin Paroz, Andrea Morris-Campbell, Rosalie Nevell and Melinda van der Meulen performing Handel's rarely-heard double-choir oratorio Solomon for performances in St Luke's Church, Toowoomba, and St John's Cathedral, Brisbane.

The Alehouse Rock

The Alehouse Rock

Inspired by the success of A Crazy Little Thing Called Art, this was a relaxed performance of arrangements of contemporary pop/rock pieces, including various drinking songs as a tribute to Oktoberfest, presented at the UQ Staff and Graduates Club.

A Crazy Little Thing Called Art

A new style of project for QUMS, this was a night of laid-back entertainment in the form of arrangements of contemporary pop/rock pieces performed by the choir as part of a charity exhibition at the Bleeding Heart Gallery, Ann St, Brisbane. The proceeds from the sale of artworks, donated by choristers, friends and family, benefited the Cancer Council Queensland.

Carmina Burana

May 22nd
Carl Orff's Carmina Burana

Performed in the Concert Hall of the Brisbane Old Museum Building and featuring soloists Peter Adams (Baritone), Annabelle Kemish (Soprano) and Ron Morris (Countertenor), QUMS presented the chamber orchestration version (for two pianos and five percussionists).

Music by Masons

Featuring a selection of the greatest works of Masonic composers including Haydn, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Sibelius, Gilbert & Sullivan, Ellington and Gershwin. Performed in the Grand Hall of the United Grand Lodge of Queensland, featuring soloists Annabelle Kemish (Soprano), Shannon Leonard (Tenor) and Samuel Johnson (Baritone), accompanied by Rupert Jeffcoat.

Joint concert with Kelvin Grove Wind Orchestra, showcasing concert favourites from Italy

May 23rd
Karl Jenkins' Requiem

Music by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins, including the Queensland Premiere of his Requiem and the Australian premiere of Te Deum. Also featuring Aaron Copland's Four Motets.
