Semester One 2018 - "Colin Brumby - A Retrospective"

Our first major concert for 2018 was held at the end of semester one.

Dr. Colin Brumby directed the Queensland University Musical Society (QUMS) choir from 1965-6 and 1978-86, often conducting his wife Jenny Dawson, herself a UQ music alumna and QUMS president of the early 70s, who performed as a soprano soloist.

It was during his second term as Musical Director of QUMS that in 1981, Colin was awarded an Advance Australia Award for service to music.

Colin made many of his published and unpublished sacred vocal works freely available to churches around the world, an act typical of his kind and generous character. His service to The University of Queensland through his lecturing and his work with QUMS has created a legacy passed on to hundreds of music students.

Dr. Brumby passed away on January 3rd 2018, and QUMS is honoured to have been able to present a concert of his works.

This concert featured guest segments from the UQ Chamber Singers, the 810 Clarinet Quartet, the Stuartholme singers, and Michele de Courcy.

QUMS was primarily conducted by our Musical Director, Elspeth Sutherland, herself a former student of Dr. Brumby. Our Associate Musical Director, Joshua Blake, also conducted some songs.
